Supported Living Services (SLS) is a program that offers instruction and support to people who need significant support to maintain their health and safety while still giving them the opportunity to live as independently as possible. Staff help the people we support exercise meaningful choice and control in their daily lives while working toward their long-range personal goals. This program also works with individuals to create supportive relationships and establish meaningful membership in the community.

SLS is similar to the ILS program but applies to individuals who require services larger in scope. Thus, services are generally more involved than ILS (e.g., general supervision for safety, adaptive equipment support, and a 24-hour emergency response system) and/or they are needed more frequently — generally greater than 50 hours per month.

Also similar to ILS, services are individualized and designed around the needs and preferences of the person receiving them. Services are very flexible, designed to support people with many different needs and may be provided up to 24 hours a day, seven days a week. As SLS can be life-long, services change as the individual’s needs change.

This program provides services in the following areas:

  • Advocacy/Self-advocacy
  • Cooking
  • Cleaning
  • Community/Generic Resource Awareness
  • Independent Recreation/Social Skill Development and Implementation
  • Menu Planning & Nutrition
  • Money Management
  • Personal Health and Hygiene including Medical/Dental needs and Laundry
  • Safety (home & community)
  • Shopping in natural environments
  • Transportation

SLS programs are monitored by the regional centers and the Dept. of Developmental Services (DDS); you may review the information provided by DDS at: https://www.dds.ca.gov/SLS/Index.cfm and/or you may check your local regional center’s website
