Achieving independence is a multi-step process that involves several factors and has no set time frame as it is individually paced:

  • Health and safety must not be jeopardized; individuals must be supported by staff and/or natural supports while learning skills and information
  • Learn necessary skills and take more responsibility for one’s needs, actions, etc. over time while still being supported by staff as needed
  • Exercise choice over daily needs and preferences in a responsible manner
  • Greater independence and more freedom follows from responsibly addressing one’s needs on a consistent basis

Each factor is equally important in our goal of empowering the people we support; our staff support people as they progress and celebrate achievements.
